Algeria: New Indicators about Workers in the Informal Economy

The Economic and Social Council of Algeria launched a new report that includes updated figures on workers in the informal economy in the country.

The report showed that the workers in the informal economy reached 4.6 million workers during the month of June / July, accounting for nearly half of the total workforce in Algeria.

The report stated that the percentage of men out of total workers in this sector reached 81.2% compared to 18.8% of women, indicating that the percentage of self-employed workers reached 12%.

The construction and trade sectors ranked first with 33%, followed by the agriculture sector with 20%, public services 18%, productive workshops 15% and fishing 14%.

The 4.6 million workers in the informal sector are facing a greater risk of contracting the Covid-19 epidemic than workers in the organized sector due to the difficulty of monitoring the extent of their respect for prevention arrangements and the various health protocols followed in the organized sector.
