The World Health Organization (WHO) said during a press conference on the occasion of the World Patient Safety Day, last Thursday through its Director-General, that for each seven cases of COVID-19, one would be among workers in the health sector, and that this number is even higher in some countries reaching one per three cases.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: “Globally, about 14 % of the recorded COVID-19 injuries reported to the organization are among medical workers, and in some countries this percentage is 35 %”, according to Reuters.
Ghebreyesus added, “It is not just about the risk of infection. Every day, medical workers are exposed to psychological pressure, exhaustion, stigma and discrimination against them, and it may reach violence.”
This statement was made in the total number of recorded infections with Coronavirus approached about 30 million, and the number of deaths reached 938.291, according to a Reuters census.
For his part, Mike Ryan, director of emergencies at WHO, said that there are three things that are haunting health workers who work on the front lines to deal with the virus.
Ryan added, “One, seeing others die in front of you without having anything in your hand to help them, and second, is to see your colleague and friend who work in this field fall ill with the virus.”
