UN denounces the situation of migrants stranded in detention camps

The UN Committee for Migrant Workers has called on governments to take immediate action to address the inhumane conditions of migrant workers stranded in detention camps.

The Committee affirmed that “video footage of migrant workers being detained sleeping and eating in facilities where raw sewage is being dumped on the ground is evidence of the shocking conditions that require immediate action by the international community.”

The United Nations Committee recalled that while governments are doing everything possible to control the most important health disaster since 1918, they must be aware that this pandemic makes migrant workers who do not have access to safe drinking water, health and health care much more vulnerable than local residents,” and called for an “immediate stop” to human rights violations against migrants.
