Jordan: Workers Union Warns of Workplaces Turning Into COVID-19 Clusters

The General Federation of Trade Unions in Jordan warned of the transformation of workplaces into Coronavirus clusters’ centers, stressing that preventing this requires intensifying attention to occupational health and safety requirements within the work environment in all economic establishments, by workers and employers alike.

Federation President Mazen Maaytah said in a press statement issued yesterday, Wednesday, that the great jump in recording the number of infections and its unprecedented levels requires commitment to the utmost caution of workers in various sectors and economic establishments, and adherence to the precautionary and preventive measures to preserve the safety of workers and the continuation of the process Productivity.

Maaytah stressed the need to adhere to Defense Order No. (11), and to responsibly deal with the instructions contained therein, pointing out that “developments in the epidemiological situation warn of a different reality that needs awareness and responsibility from everyone and depends on coexisting with the pandemic and not returning to the strategy of closing sectors and comprehensive caution.”

The President of the Federation also called on employers in the private sector to provide all sanitization materials and preventive protection tools and to take preventive measures that would ensure social distancing between workers and prevent gatherings and mixing between them. He, as well, called for activating occupational health and safety committees according to Article 85 of the Labor Law.

Maaytah pointed out to the importance of the trade unions affiliated to the General Federation, and all its branches and trade union committees, to follow up the implementation of procedures and measures related to occupational safety within the work environment and places where workers are located.
