Egypt: The Trade Union Services Office prepares a document detailing violations of public company workers' regulations

The Coordinator-General of the Office of Trade Union Services and Workers, Kamel Abbas, said that the draft regulation of human resources relating to workers in public enterprises, drawn up by the Minister of Public Works, reflects the vision of those in charge of the sector on the deterioration of the situation of public enterprises; a vision that seeks to reduce the damage without taking into account the real causes that led to this failure.

Based on international testimony, Kamel Abbas claimed that Egypt’s public pharmaceutical industry has enabled Egypt to cope with the spread of Covid-19 by providing the necessary medicines. According to the union leader, this clearly indicates the importance of the role of the public sector and public enterprises in managing all economic and other crises.

In this context, the Coordinator-General of the Office for Trade Union and Workers' Services stated that the draft regulation, proposed for opinion by the Minister for Public Undertakings, is a project that represents a flagrant violation of the provisions of the Labour Code n°12 of the year 2003, of the new law on social security n°148 of the year 2019 and other laws. He also recalled that the trade unions were not consulted in the preparation of this draft, even though they represent the workers who are the first concerned by such a text.
