The President of the General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions, Mazen Maaitah, denounced the decision of the Ministry of Labour concerning the days of confinement which will not be considered as days of leave on the pretext that the decision comes from the National Centre for Security and Crisis Management and not from the head of government or the Ministerial Council. In a media statement granted Thursday, November 5, 2020, Mazen Maaitah indicated that the trade union center rejects this decision which has no legal basis and which violates labour laws.
The President of the General Federation stressed that what applies on general sanitary containment, imposed to deal with the spread of the pandemic, must imperatively apply on official leave days pursuant to a decision issued by the Head of Government. Any further action is a clear violation of workers’ rights, the union official said, adding that the socio-economic impacts of Covid-The Ministry of Labour must take action to support this class and not decisions that further weaken it.
Mazen Maaitah called on the ministry to review its decision and to consult with the General Federation and the various unions in the formulation of decisions that concern workers and their legitimate rights. The interested party warned against the effects of this decision which will lead to disputes and tensions in the various sectors.
Recall that during a press briefing, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Labour announced that the days of confinement will not be counted as official leave since the decision comes from the National Centre for Security and Crisis Management and not from the Head of Government or the Ministerial Council. The
spokesperson added that the calculation of workers' wages during general sanitary confinement differs according to the classification of the work day (if it is a weekly leave or if it is a working day) in accordance with Defence Decree No 6 and Judgment No 10.
