WHO: Epidemiological Situation is Very Serious and Europe is Greatly Threatened

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that COVID-19 cases are rising in an alarming level in all countries of the world, especially in Europe, as a very dangerous situation is prevailing throughout the continent.

With the number of Coronavirus infections rising to record numbers, European governments are imposing strict domestic measures and imposing further closures in an attempt to limit the second wave of the epidemic.

WHO’s Regional Director, Hans Kluge, said at a press conference Thursday, as reported by CNN that “the increase in cases should serve as a warning of what is to come”.

Kluge added, “The weekly cases now exceed those that were reported when the pandemic reached its peak for the first time in Europe in March”, noting that last week, the weekly number exceeded 300.000 patients in the region.

Klug noted that more than half of European countries have reported a 10% increase in new cases in the past two weeks. Of these, he said, seven countries had the newly reported cases double in the same period.

WHO Regional Director continued to say that “In the spring and early summer, we were able to see the impact of the strict lockdown measures. Our efforts and sacrifices have paid off. June witnessed an all-time low in the number of cases, however, September case numbers should be an alert call to all of us.

Klug said that while there was an increase in cases in the older age groups, ages 50 to 79, in the first week of September, the largest proportion of new cases was still between the ages of 25 and 49.

Countries across the continent are working to ease lockdowns and reopen their economies, but governments are now scrambling to avoid further outbreaks.
