Algeria: Ministry of Labor Announces that Half a Million Workers Were Affected by the Pandemic

The Algerian Ministry of Labor announced the results of a report it conducted on the implications of Coronavirus pandemic on workers in Algeria.

The ministry said that 200.000 workers had lost their financial income since last March, and that 50.000 had lost their work, in exchange for 180 cases of late payment of wages for periods ranging between two and three months.

The Algerian Economic and Social Council published a study last July, which expected unprecedented rates of unemployment ranging between 17% and 20%.

The COVID-19 pandemic has essentially paralyzed the struggling economy, due to the continued decline in oil revenues, which account for more than 92% of revenues, as crude exports declined in the first quarter of this year by 25% compared to the same period in 2019.
