The Executive Office of the National Confederation of Mauritanian Workers (CNTM by its French acronym) issued a statement criticizing the shortcomings in the Mauritanian government’s response to the emerging COVID-19 pandemic.
CNTM said in its statement that “despite all the time that had passed and the measures that have been taken, the obtained results remained below the aspirations of citizens in general, and in particular the productive forces which disrupted most of its activities because of the precautionary measures.”
CNTM also added that, “The pandemic has led to a significant increase in the number of unemployed people as a result of stopping projects and blocking public employment paths for those eager to join it, in the next three years at least, after the approval of the increase in working age and the restrictions imposed on higher education for the next five years.”
In the conclusion of its statement, CNTM called for:
– Opening a comprehensive tripartite social dialogue with a focus on the effects of the pandemic to develop a solid vision for dealing with COVID-19, determining the requirements to coexist with it, and limiting its damages.
– Fulfilling of the obligations made by the Central Committee, relating to granting compensation to professionals and limited incomes from street vendors and artisans.
– Allocating satisfactory sums to workers in the fields of health, security, education and the unclassified sector who were affected by the precautionary measures, and for those who needed to be employed outside their working hours or during their vacations.
– Reviewing the policies currently adopted in the management of the Pandemic Fund, and reviewing the composition of the supervisory committee, in order to achieve more transparency, inclusiveness, dynamism and justice.
– Prohibiting deals relating to the Pandemic Fund.
– Giving greater vitality to the performance of the administration and the judiciary to ensure greater effectiveness in facing challenges; through adopting accurate competence and integrity standards in appointments and promotions.
