Jordan: General Federation of Jordan Trade Unions Calls for the Activation of Occupational Safety and Health Committees in Economic Establishments

The General Federation of Jordan Trade Unions called on employers in private sector economic establishments, to activate the occupational safety and health committees to play their role in maintaining the health and safety of workers and to follow up on the implementation of what was stated by Defense Order No. (11), especially with the increasing number of new Coronavirus infections.

Federation President Mazen Maaytah said, in a press statement, that these committees are one of the practical tools that greatly contribute to maintaining the health and safety of workers during their presence in the work environment, and during their performance of their required tasks, as well as follow-up related matters in this regard. Especially with the developments of the epidemiological situation of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Maaytah added that the “Formation of Committees and Supervisors of Occupational Safety and Health” for the year 1998 promulgated under Article (85) of the Labor Law, defines the competence and duties of these committees, supervisors and duties. The same article indicated that the provisions of the system apply to any establishment in which the number of workers exceeds (30) workers in Sectors specified by the Minister of Labor.

Maaytah also appealed to all workers in various sectors and economic establishments to act with responsibility and caution, and to adhere to the preventive measures put in place in order to preserve the permanence of work, the safety of workers and ensure that no infections are recorded, stressing the importance of downloading the “AMAN” application for tracking contacts and detecting new infections.

Maaytah called on the unions affiliated to the General Federation of Jordan Trade Unions and their branches as well as trade union committees in all work sites in the various governorates of the Kingdom to coordinate and follow-up with employers to implement procedures and measures related to this matter.

Maaytah also called these affiliates to work on activating occupational safety and health committees and to actively participate in them, in addition to ensuring the availability of personal protection tools, sterilization materials and disinfectants.
