Palestine: A new report on the reality of workers in occupied regions.

The Palestinian Statistics Authority published report in which it monitored the reality of Palestinian workers in the occupied interior, the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic, and the measures taken to reduce it. The number of Palestinian workers in Israel and the settlements decreased by about 26,000(approx.) workers between the first and second quarter of 2020.

The report indicated that the number of workers decreased from about 120,000 workers in the first quarter of 2020 to 94,000 workers in the second.

This decrease has been attributed to the measures that have been taken to limit the spread of the Coronavirus, as the number of workers has decreased dramatically among individuals over 50 years old.

The largest decrease observed was in the number of workers in the construction sector by 20,600 workers, followed by the industrial and agricultural sectors by 2,700 and 2,000 workers respectively, and the number of workers in Israeli settlements decreased from 21 thousand workers in the first quarter of 2020 to 13 thousand workers in second quarter 2020.

The report also indicates that the average daily wage for workers in occupied zones and settlements in the first half of 2020 fell from 265 shekels to 255 shekels.

Difficult economic conditions force tens of thousands of Palestinians in the West Bank to work in Israel; Palestinians are prevented from working without obtaining special permits. Tel Aviv has shown to be difficult in granting workers permits for work, which forces many workers to enter Israel through informal and illegal means in search of job opportunities.
