Libya: Contact Lost with a Boat of Migrants Near the Coast of Malta

Non-Governmental Organization “Alarm Phone” said that they had lost contact with a boat carrying more than 70 migrants who entered the Maltese waters coming from the Libyan shores side.

In the context of the recent noticeable surge of the illegal migration movement from Libya, the Tunisian Navy saved 70 clandestine migrants two days ago, including 5 women and 4 infants, from different African nationalities who sailed from the city of Zawia in an attempt to surreptitiously go through the Italian coasts and were about to drown.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has issued a report on the inhumane situation that migrants are still facing in Mediterranean countries, including Libya.

In its report, UNHCR revealed that more than 6.200 refugees and migrants were disembarked in Libya this year, and they face appalling violations and circumstances.

According to the same report, these migrants end up in informal centers or warehouses under the control of smugglers and traffickers who physically abuse them in order to obtain payments.
