The Italian mayor of Lampedusa has announced that the island is witnessing an “invasion” made by migrants from North Africa.
“The situation has become uncontrollable, If the government does not control the situation, I will declare a state of emergency”, Mayor Toto Martello told Italian News Agency.
The News Agency added that there are 1027 migrants on the island, which covers an area of 20 square kilometers, including 203 who arrived on board seven boats, who were believed to be coming from Tunisia, which were intercepted last night.
The News Agency also said that about 50 of the newly arrived migrants are being held in tents in the port of Lampedusa, due to the lack of other accommodation facilities.
It is important to note that the island of Lampedusa includes a center for migrants, but with an official capacity of only 95 people, which forces the Italian authorities to organize transfers of these migrants to Porto Empedocelli on the island of Sicily – where about 200 were transferred there last Friday.
