Workers of the Nile Insulation Materials Company in Alexandria entered an open sit-in since last Saturday in protest of the company’s management’s neglect of real and serious negotiation concerning their demands.
The company’s employees have repeatedly asked for responses to their demands with the profits that the administration disburses to them almost every three years and did not act despite exceeding its deadline.
They also denounced the lack of health care coverage of a number of new workers who have been working for the company for nearly a year, especially in light of the high incidence of varicose and cartilage diseases, in addition to the severe risks that workers are exposed to as a result of dealing with derivatives of carcinogens, including chemical gases that are part of the production process.
The list of workers’ demands also included setting a specific date for the annual increase and the necessity to raise the wages that the workers described as weak which on average amounts to 3500 pounds (220 dollars).
Employees also raised demands for the disbursement of their social allowance that the administration is yet to touch upon, as well as the need to install and exchange grants on Occasions such as Ramadan, Eid and start of new school year.
The employees of the company have indicated as well that the average annual production of the company reaches ten million square meters of segments of insulation materials, which is a large number and most of it is exported abroad.
It is important to mention that the Nile Company for Insulating Materials is an Egyptian joint stock company managed by businessman Hisham El-Banhawy, which is one of the investment sectors of the Alexandria Company for Specialized Petroleum Materials and employs approximately 200 workers.
