Secretary-General of the Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT), Noureddine Taboubi, warned of the aggravation of the social crisis in Tunisia, describing the unemployed and the poor as a “time bomb” that could explode at any time.
The Secretary-General added, during a speech delivered at the occasion of the Media Syndicate conference, that prices are spiking in Tunisia compared to other countries, and that the minimum wage is supposed to be in the range of 1000 TND ($ 400).
In the same context, Taboubi recalled that retirees receive very low pensions and that the majority among them receive an amount of money that is far less than the guaranteed minimum wage.
Tunisia is experiencing, like other Arab countries, an economic crisis that was exacerbated due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and there were frequent reports of the Tunisian government intending to let go of a number of its public institutions in the face of strong opposition from UGTT.
