The Ministry of Labor and the National Commission for Lebanese Women Affairs announced the launch of an awareness campaign, which calls, according to a statement by the authority, “Domestic workers to contact the Ministry of Labor hotline 1741 to file complaints if they are facing any problem or when they need any support or advice”.
This action comes as an urgent response to the aggravation of the difficult cases of domestic workers since the outbreak of the economic crisis and the measures imposed due to the repercussions of the Coronavirus pandemic, as the economic conditions of some employers have worsened and thus multiple delays salaries payment took place, especially with the high dollar exchange rate, and some sponsors were forced to stop paying The contract was broken, which pushed many of these workers to homelessness in front of their countries’ embassies”.
It is important to mention that the Lebanese Ministry of Labor launched a plan to dismantle the sponsorship system currently in force in Lebanon after the Ministry, in cooperation with the International Labor Organization (ILO), reached the final version of the unified contract for the employment of domestic workers, and was presented and discussed in detail during a national consultation in preparation for approval by the Ministry of Labor”.
The statement declared that “the Ministry of Labor is holding extensive meetings in order to modernize the Lebanese labor law, and one of the most prominent amendments that are working on its approval is the protection of domestic workers in order to make their work compatible with decent work terms”.
The statement concluded that “The launch and activation of the hotline services 1741 to receive complaints from domestic workers comes as one of the most prominent steps that would contribute to assisting this category of workers in Lebanon and provide support to them as well as respect their rights and the privacy of their status”.
