Yemen: IOM Reveals the Arrest of Thousands of Migrants in Yemen

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has revealed that thousands of migrants have been arrested, most of whom are Ethiopian nationals, and added that the arrests were made under the pretext that these migrants had COVID-19, as reported by Reuters.

Thousands of Ethiopian workers cross Yemen annually towards Saudi Arabia, but restrictions to contain the spread of the Coronavirus in Yemen have caused a decrease in the number of Ethiopian people crossing the borders.

Among those already there, thousands of them were transported by bus or truck to cities such as Aden and Marib, where they got stranded, according to IOM.

‘It is a very difficult situation in which the difficulties of free access was combined with their hard living conditions’,WHO spokesman Paul Dillon told reporters in Geneva.

Dillon added that an unknown number of stranded migrants may be in detention camps that lack health standards.

It is reported that Yemen arrested Ethiopian migrants last year putting them in open football stadiums and in an army camp. These workers usually go to Saudi Arabia as cleaners or drivers.
