Libya: COVID-19 Spread Among Migrant Workers

Director of the Libyan National Center for Disease Control Badr Al-Din Al-Najjar announced in a press statement that the number of COVID-19 cases among migrant workers has become catastrophic.

Al-Najjar pointed out that what is very worrying is that there are dozens of infections, and no one cares about that, no one also knows anything about the places where foreign workers gather, as described by the medical official.

The epidemiological situation is bad, confirming that chaos may lead to more than that and also indicating that both citizens and government are at fault.

Al-Najjar also expected a significant increase in the number of deaths, and that the pandemic will get out of control.

“Citizens were committed to starting the imposed measures, but the government’s ignoring of the situtation and not thinking about a clear mechanism to cope with the crisis…Issuing successive decisions to extend the ban, pushed people to violate it, caring less about the results”, added Al-Najjar.

It is noteworthy that, as of yesterday, the number of infections in Libya had reached 1392 cases amid suspicions about the accuracy of this number, due to the difficulty of following up the epidemiological situation because of the ongoing armed conflict in the country.
