ILO Summit: Speaking on Behalf of Other Arab Trade Unions, What’s the Content of the Speech of the Secretary General of the General Union of Algerian Workers?

On behalf of his organization and on the Arab trade union organizations, the Secretary-General of Algerian Workers, Salim Labahata, delivered an intervention during the World Summit of the International Labor Organization (ILO), in which he said that “This summit comes in the context of a very serious health, economic and social crisis and repercussions on employment as well as on working conditions and the lives of workers”.

Labahata added that “We in the International Confederation and the Arab Trade Union Confederation believe in the urgency of enacting a new social contract around which the social parties would meet in order to build a platform to address the effects of the pandemic and for joint action plans that take into account the reality of the financial capabilities of the countries of the south”.

He also noted that “The review of the social contract must take into everyone’s need and this can only be rectified through social dialogue.”

Speaking of future business plans, he told Batsha that “It will be necessary, in our view, before adopting any business strategy taking into account the limited financial capabilities of developing countries that cannot exit the COVID-19 crisis without the support and active solidarity of rich countries”.

As for the economic and social situation in Algeria during the pandemic, Labahata said that “Our tripartite meeting intensified during the pandemic and we succeeded in securing the salaries of workers and employees, especially in the public sector, throughout the public quarantine period, despite the difficult situation due to the interruption of production. We are also working in full swing to reduce the economic impacts of COVID-19”.

At the end of his speech, Labahata mentioned the need for a comprehensive, fair and balanced global strategy to reduce the impacts of Coronavirus or any other pandemic in a sustainable manner.
