The General Confederation of Bahrain Trade Unions issued a statement the day before yesterday, regarding the violation of pension rights, in which the Union rejected the ongoing efforts to make changes to the pensions’ system.
The Confederation considered such attempts as a violation to the pension rights of workers in the public and private sectors as well as being an explicit violation of their earnings, which should be exempt from any kind of negotiations.
The statement stressed that all the approved international labor standards denounce the violation of any acquired workers’ and retirees’ rights, considering such ongoing efforts to stop the annual increase of 3% on pensioners’ pensions as a violation of their rights.
The Confederation noted that we must bear in mind that a large segment of retirees does not meet their basic living needs with the pension they receive, and they find great difficulty facing inflation and high prices, in addition to stopping subsidies on basic materials such as electricity, water, fuel and meat, and the imposed value-added tax on many goods and services.
The Confederation also called to stop overburdening workers by further raising the proportion of insurance contributions, considering that the conditions of the largest segment of workers cannot bear any increase in insurance contributions, and the current economic and social conditions put great pressure on the working class as a whole.
