The Iraqi Observatory for Workers and Employees Rights released its report for May 2020. The report covered the economic and social situation during the Coronavirus pandemic and its implications for the fundamental rights of workers.
In a statistic of the number of laid-off workers, the report confirmed the loss of 2044 workers and employees to their jobs due to economic difficulties.
The report documented cases of wages deprivation in a number of government installations, especially in the Kurdistan Region, the Southern Electricity Directorate and the Basra Gas Company.
It is noteworthy that the Iraqi Observatory for the Rights of Workers and Employees was established at the beginning of this year by a group of trade union activists, human rights and civilians, with the aim of strengthening the basics to protect the fundamental rights of workers in a country that witnesses wholesale violations of trade union rights and freedoms.
