The fifth report of the International Labor Organization (ILO) Observatory, entitled “COVID-19 and the World of Work”, showed that female workers have been affected by the pandemic more than others.
This fact means the loss of the limited gains that were achieved in the field of gender equality in the world of work in recent decades and records a decline and the increase in cases of gender inequality in work sites.
The report emphasized that the severe impact of COVID-19 on female workers is due to their high presence in the economic sectors that were the most affected by the crisis, such as housing, food industries, sales and manufacturing.
At the international level, approximately 510 million women or 40% of all female workers operate in the four sectors that were the most affected compared to the percentage of 36.6% for men.
Women dominate domestic work, the health care and social work sectors, which makes them more prone to the loss of income and exposure to infection as well as the decreases in their access to social protection.
