Egypt: “Mahalla” Spinning Company, Which Employs Thousands of Workers, Will Resume Work Next Saturday, Amid Fears of COVID-19

Misr Spinning and Weaving Company in Al-Mahalla Al-Kubra announced in an official statement that all workers will resume their jobs without any exception as of next Saturday.

This decision came in implementation of the state’s plan to gradually lift the ban while taking all necessary precautions to prevent the spread of infection.

The statement excluded women who are pregnant an those taking care of children under the age of 12 years old, or workers who have HIV.

In this context, the statement also noted that people with any advanced chronic diseases such as “tumors that require chemical treatment – kidney failure – rheumatoid – heart – liver – blood diseases – leukemia – platelet deficiency” would be given an exceptional leave until further instructions.

The board of directors of Al-Mahalla Al-Kubra Spinning and Weaving Company decided, at a later time, to make workers residing in all governorates and villages of Gharbia Governorate resume their jobs, with the exception of several villages where the virus is widespread; following to the necessary precautions.

The labor community and the media did not hide the existence of real concerns about the spread of the virus among the company’s workers, especially in the absence of any pre-emptive action for work resumption, such as conducting a COVID-19 test before returning to work.
