Lebanon / Follow-up: Ethiopian Workers Sit-in Again in Front of Ethiopian Consulate

Ethiopian workers looked again at their country’s consulate in Beirut, in a clear indication of the continuing tragedy after their employers abandoned them on the pretext of not being able to pay salaries.

A few days ago, the Lebanese Ministry of Labor secured a hotel for them, before being assembled in a shelter, by the non-governmental ‘Caritas’ Association and provided them with health, humanitarian, food and legal services until a comprehensive solution was found.

Caritas announced in a statement on Monday, that “13 of the 36 workers asked to leave for the sit-in again in front of the Ethiopian consulate, to pressure their government to decide on their travel file as soon as possible, and allowed them to leave, because the workers come to the shelters of their own will, and leave Of their own will.”

Caritas explained that the 23 women who stayed in the shelter house want to stay to take advantage of the available services until they travel, and that the institution understands their concerns, and is in solidarity with their cause and their struggle to obtain their rights and travel as quickly as possible.

Commenting on the renewed sit-in, the Lebanese Minister of Labor said that “the main problem is that the Ethiopian airline imposes payment of the price of the travel ticket in US dollars, and the cost is high, in addition to booking in the hotel for 14 days”, hoping that “the Ethiopian consulate will facilitate the affairs of workers Soon”.

The association also noted that no action was taken against employers and sponsors as a result of their inhumane behavior towards women workers.
