Tunisia: General Strike on Sunday in the Oil Sector in Tataouine Governorate

The regional syndicate of the Tunisian governorate of Tataouine announced in a statement last Wednesday its rejection of the decisions of the closed Ministerial Council, and considered it a contempt for the region’s entitlements, demands and the sacrifices of its children.

The regional syndicate affiliated with the Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT by its French initials) held the government responsible for all the escalating forms of protest that might arise from its decisions, calling for their serious engagement with the region’s demands away from any security approaches in dealing with civil peaceful protests.

UGTT regional syndicate reaffirmed the union’s right to use all required protest forms, including a general strike, and in this context, it called on its members of the oil companies to perform a general strike for a period of 3 days with a total cessation of production beginning on Sunday, July 12.

It is noteworthy that civil protests that took place in the governorate of Tataouine early last week, following the announcement of a regional general strike, ended in confrontations with police forces.
