UAE: European Parliament MP Calls for Punishing the UAE for Violating Workers’ Rights

European Parliament MP Charles Goerens has called on the United Arab Emirates to urgently change its laws in alignment with the international agreements and treaties for the protection of women and children.

In an interview with NewsWire Network, the MP added that the European Union has enacted a law that prohibits all kinds of discrimination and defends the rights of migrant workers within the EU, and that countries outside the European Union should adopt similar laws.

Goerens added to the same source that the International Labor Organization (ILO) can provide the necessary advice to the UAE on ways to adapt such legislation to suit its own context.

Goerens also said that in relation to the UAE situation, the European Parliament is currently working on drafting a new mechanism to punish individuals who violate human rights, similar to the American Magnitsky Law.

Goerens pointed out as well that the European Parliament has repeatedly warned of the human rights violations committed by the UAE through decisions and messages addressed to the UAE government, such as in the case of Alia Abdulnour, Emirati citizen who died in prison after a struggle with cancer.

Pleas of human rights organizations and international bodies to convince the authorities to release her were in vain though. The European Parliament had also sent a message to the UAE authorities calling for her release then.
