Egypt: ‘Setcore Spinning’Company Violating Rights of its Workers

Workers of “Setcore Spinning” Company in Borg Al Arab Industrial City in Alexandria continue their sit-in within the company’s premises to demand their financial rights and restart unreasonable suspension of the company.

These demands were faced by the administration’s insistence to liquidate the company under the pretext of the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis and the collapse of the company’s economic situation, despite the fact that the company have been achieving profits in previous years before the issuance of such decision.

The company’s decision came according to the pretext of its development and through granting workers a wage which approximately amounts to 30% of the wage that workers receive before the suspension decision.

Egyptian Labor Services House announced that the representatives of the administration rejected the procedures of any negotiation with the workers, before government agencies pressured the administration to implement the law and accept negotiations with workers.

These negotiation sessions were unsuccessful though, as a negotiation session was held between representatives of workers and a representative of the owners of the company on June 18th.

During these sessions, the representative of the administration rejected the workers’ demands to restart the company and pay the salary differences deducted by the administration for approximately 300 workers.

The aforementioned representative disclosed during the negotiation that the administration is leaning towards the liquidation of the company and the lay off of employees in exchange of a month’s salary only for each spent year of service.

This proposal was rejected by the workers who insisted on restarting the company or applying the law if the owners and management could provide real justifications for liquidating the company and laying off employees.

Workers also noted that they need to be paid two months for each year of service, not one month, and they should be disbursed all the delayed financial rights such as the wages’ deductions, profits, and bonuses which they have not received during the elapsed period.

Workers decided to continue their sit-in inside the company, which is currently going into its seventh day.
