Oman: “No Objection” Certificate Condition to be Cancelled Starting Next Year

Omani authorities confirmed their decision to cancel the “no-objection” certificate to transfer one worker from one job to another starting next year.

This decision comes after Oman ratified its accession to the International Covenant on Social and Economic Rights, early April.

The Covenant stipulates that ratifying countries recognize the right of everyone to enjoy just and favorable conditions of work

This will contribute to enhancing the competitiveness of Omani workers versus their foreign counterparts by reducing the wage and rights gap between them, and also contributing to reducing instances of non-Omani workforce escaping, especially those that may be pressured by employers who cling to the right to issue a no-objection certificate in order to deprive workers from working elsewhere in the Sultanate within two years of the end of the period of their contract with the employer.

In addition, the decision will result in reducing costs and administrative burdens resulting from deportation procedures and regularization of legal statuses.
