The epidemiological cluster in the “Lala Maimouna” area of the Moroccan city of Kenitra has resulted in a solidarity and human rights victory for workers infected with the Coronavirus, coinciding with calls for accountability of the ministers of industry, agriculture, employment and health.
After the regional authorities in Quneitra announced that 151 female workers were infected with the Coronavirus, the Moroccan Forum for Democracy and Human Rights called for the immediate resignation of the Minister of Employment and Professional Integration and the health representative in Quneitra, and announced the need to establish safety measures for women agricultural workers as a priority to achieve financial profit and tighten control over industrial and agricultural units in the region.
The Forum also stressed the need ton provide health safety requirements and conditions, and to strengthen the roles of the labor inspectorate and social security inspectorate.
Furthermore, the federation of the Women’s Rights Association (non-governmental) called on the parliament to hold the government and the relevant sectors accountable for the circumstances of the spread of the virus among workers, stressing the need to arrange responsibilities and hold those involved accountable.
In its statement, the women’s organization called for revealing the reality of the measures taken by the government, which are related to some employers of agricultural women and industrial units, in order to effectively respect the rights of women workers and ensure health and social protection for them, and eliminate manifestations of discrimination and violence against them, and the measures that they will take in order to tackle and eradicate the conditions and factors of economic and social fragility that women in general suffer from, which were deepened by the Coronavirus pandemic, and made them obvious than ever before.
It is noteworthy that, on Friday, Morocco recorded a record increase in the number of cases of Coronavirus, where 539 injuries were recorded, which is the largest daily rate of injuries since the outbreak of the pandemic on March 2, of which only 457 were in the “Lala Maimouna” cluster.
