Tunisian Ministry of Health announced that the number of victims that drowned off the coast of the Tunisian island of Kerkennah has exceeded fifty people, most of them are women. The burial process has begun.
The nationalities of the victims are from sub-Saharan African countries, and in a statement, the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES by its French Initials) announced that what happened is an inevitable result of the European Union’s security and inhuman migration policies.
FTDES called on to deal with the bodies of the victims in a manner that preserves human dignity.
Security authorities of the governorate of Sfax revealed that one of the bodies belonged to a Tunisian, who later turned out to be the captain of the boat.
It is noteworthy that the number of illegally organized boat trips from the Tunisian coasts increased by 156 % in the period between January and the end of April compared to the same period in 2019, according to Vincent Kochtal, UNHCR’s delegate.
