The Macroeconomic Department of the Council of Ministers in Kuwait announced that the government is studying a plan to let go 45.000 migrants working in the government sector with the intention of substituting them with Kuwaiti citizens during the years 2020 and 2021.
The document cited the aggravation of the unemployment crisis among Kuwaitis to justify the mentioned plan of dispensation, and also dealt with the deteriorating economic situation in light of the collapse of oil prices and the deficit of the public budget.
Press reports also indicated that the COVID-19 crisis constituted an appropriate context for the introduction of a macroeconomic management document, especially in light of the companies’ layoffs where tens of thousands of workers lost their jobs due to the suspension of production.
The same reports indicated that the Kuwaiti economy may need three years to recover, a period that may require painful decisions in a clear indication of the continuing mass layoffs.
It is also noteworthy that Kuwait have been witnessing the departure of thousands of workers towards their countries, especially Egyptians.
