Mauritania: Full Text of the Controversial Mauritanian Gender Bill

The Arab Trade Union Confederation (ATUC) has obtained a copy of the “Gender” bill in Mauritania. This law comes in the context of countering violence against women.

The draft law has sparked controversy among the public in Mauritania and among parliamentarians. Scholars and parliamentarians have confirmed that some of its articles are violating to Islamic law.

The draft law tackles ‘violence against women and girls. It was prepared by the current Minister of Justice and referred to the Ministry of Social Affairs, Childhood and Family, which presented it to the government for ratification, and referred it to the Parliament.

It is reported that the government had previously referred the bill twice to Parliament in 2018, before it withdrew it after it got controversial, and it was rejected within the Parliamentary Committee, as well as by parliamentarians from various political parties.
