Morocco: Crisis in Royal Air Maroc

Moroccan media reported on serious economic difficulties threatening the Royal Moroccan Airlines due to the COVID-19 crisis and foresaw a difficult year end due to the bleak prospects for tourism and air transport.

Some media outlets have called on the Moroccan government to urgently intervene to adopt a rescue program for the company, which is facing multiple debts.

The newspaper “Maroc Hebido” estimated the losses of the Royal Moroccan Airlines at 17 billion dirhams, equivalent to 1.7 billion dollars since the beginning of the pandemic, and the Moroccan newspaper illustrated that 500.000 direct and indirect jobs are seriously threatened.

If some other newspaper articles were free from the tone of pessimism, most of them stressed that exceeding the consequences of these losses will remain difficult and may require special years in the absence of a national plan to save the Royal Moroccan Airlines.

It is noteworthy that the Royal Air Maroc is one of the largest airlines in Africa, which provides flights to Africa, Europe, Asia, North America and South America. It reached an average of 7.8 million passengers in 2019.
