UNICEF launched an appeal for $ 1.6 billion in support of its humanitarian effort for children affected by the Coronavirus crisis.
“This pandemic is a health crisis that quickly turned into a crisis for children’s rights. Schools were closed, parents are out of work and families are under increasing pressures”, said UNICEF’s Executive Director.
“Access to basic services, such as health care and routine immunization, has declined for hundreds of millions of children, which could lead to a significant increase in child deaths. At the same time, there are impacts on mental and psychological health due to movement restrictions and school closures. The isolation that followed, and these effects are likely to deepen the already heavy pressures, especially on vulnerable children”, noted UNICEF in its statement.
The same press release also said: “We have seen what the pandemic can inflict on countries with advanced health systems, and we are concerned about what it can do to countries with weaker health systems and with fewer resources”.
It is reported that frequent reports unanimously highlight the risk factors of violence and abuse against children, women and girls, record cases of deprivation of health and protection for refugee and migrant children, and an increase of their exposure to hate and discrimination.
