The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights confirmed its deep concern over reports concerning migrants and spoke of the disaster of detaining search and rescue ships that roam the Mediterranean at a time when dangerous trips through the sea continue from Libya to Europe.
After the decision to detain the rescue ships, Alan Kurdi and “Aita Mare”, there were no longer any humanitarian search and rescue ships in the Mediterranean, which re-opened the debate on the legal measures adopted to obstruct the work of humanitarian NGOs.
The UNHCR called for the immediate lifting of restrictions imposed on the work of humanitarian ships, because this endangers the lives of thousands of people, especially in light of the number of migrants from Libya doubling to four times compared to the number during the same period in 2019.
