The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced that migrants in Yemen are getting targeted by some dangerous campaigns accusing them of being “carriers of the disease”, which exposes them to serious violations, especially in light of the state of insecurity in the country.
Since Yemen announced that the first case of coronavirus infection was a Somali refugee, physical and verbal attacks and forced quarantine imposed on migrants in Yemen have been frequent.
According to newspaper articles, cases of denial of access to health services, restrictions on movement against migrants, as well as cases of food, water and basic services deprivation were recorded.
IOM Director for the Middle East and North Africa called for an immediate cease of the stigmatization campaigns against migrants through connecting them to the virus threat that broke all borders and spread to almost all countries of the world.
With the number of people infected with COVID-19 in Yemen increasing, people in the country need support today more than any other time to tackle the spread of the virus and to ensure that all vulnerable communities, including displaced individuals and migrants, have access to health services and information for prevention measures, as reported by both WHO and IOM.
