The United Nations (UN) human rights experts issued a statement calling on governments and companies to ensure that all workers are protected from exposure to COVID-19. Regardless of the classification of these workers in countries and companies, they have the right to be protected from exposure to hazards at work sites, including the threat of the Corona virus.
The same statement expressed concern about the lack of full protection for workers who are on the front lines to counter the virus.
The same press release also welcomed the call issued by the 2019 International Labor Conference to include the right of the worker to a safe working environment as a right and a fundamental principle of the International Labor Organization (ILO), considering it a good initiative, but is still lacking, as it is pending ILO’s full recognition of this right.
According to the ILO, forcing vulnerable workers to work in unsafe conditions is classified as forced labor.
It was reported that these experts were appointed by the Geneva Human Rights Council, which is an inter-governmental body responsible for the promotion and protection of human rights around the world.
