Mauritania: Taziazit Workers Strike in its Second Week

The open strike announced by workers of the Canadian company Taziazit on May 4 is in its second week amid the current stalemate and the lack of any possible dialogue. Work had stopped in this institution which is located in the “Inchiri” area north of the capital Nouakchott.

The reasons behind the strike are due to the company’s breach of the agreement signed with the trade unions in 2019 and taking advantage of the Corona crisis to prevent the miners from resting and increasing working hours without counting these hours in the wage scale, especially in light of the vast gap between the salaries of Mauritanian workers and foreign workers in the company.

In its response to the strike, the company issued a statement in which it said that the strike will have an impact on workers’ wages and the company’s budget, while expressing its willingness to make amends to the situation in light of clear contradiction as well as the lack of a real will to find a solution to the situation.

It is important to note that Taziazit workers confirmed the success of the strike by 90%, as both the factory and the operating mechanisms were completely halted in the mine.
