Libya: Neither Coronavirus nor War Can Halt the Flow of Migrants Across the Desert

Niger authorities announced the arrest of more than 300 migrants on its borders with Libya in only two weeks, the highest rate in years, despite the situation affected by the Corona pandemic and the Libyan war.

Thousands of Sub-Saharan Africans continue their attempts to cross the desert through northern Niger towards Libya and then to Europe on a difficult journey, that could be considered the most dangerous due the harsh climate in the desert and the dangers of war in Libya.

Niger authorities have announced that the quarantine measures that they have adopted and the limitation on movement have not prevented these migrants from entering the country towards Libya, challenging the heavy guard imposed by the Libyan and Nigerian sides to address irregular migration and the risk of infiltration of “dangerous” individuals into both countries.

It is reported that, since 2011, due to the fragility of the security situation, Libya has become the number one crossing point for Sub-Saharan African migrants towards Europe and has turned into a new hub for human trafficking.
