With the participation of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development and officials in charge of food security in a number of Arab countries in addition to a group of experts, the Economic and Social Committee for Western Asia, ESCWA, organized a panel discussion on the challenges of food security in the Arab region in light of the COVID-19 crisis with the aim of sharing experiences and benefiting from successful experiences at the international level to enhance food security in these situations.
ESCWA presented a report on the new challenges to food security due to the Coronavirus crisis, which included the impact of this pandemic and a series of measures proposed at a regional and a local level to alleviate its implications for food security.
The participating organizations and experts reviewed the measures that should be taken, and the discussions dealt with the response measures adopted by some Arab countries to mitigate the consequences and impact of the pandemic.
The dialogue was concluded with stressing the importance of periodic following up on regional communication to enable the sustainability of the agricultural sector and food.
It was also suggested to develop an online platform to enhance the documentation of countries’ initiatives in order to encourage the exchange of experiences and expertise.
