Jordan: Several Violations by Employers

According to Tamkeen Center for Legal Aid and Human Rights, since the start of the official holiday, its team has monitored approximately 64 cases whose owners have decided to file a complaint with their employers for violating their labor rights. They noted that more than 800 cases of violations against workers have been observed, but they have refused to file complaints for fear of contract termination in light of the difficulty to obtaina job at this moment.

In a report issued by the center, the most important violations that the Tamkeen team monitored are “forced labor in violation of government decisions in accordance with Article 77 of the Labor Law, layoffs, and an obligation by the employer to sign an illegal declaration and, forcing the worker to work in a closed facility contrary to government decisions, threatening to fire them, as well as not including remuneration during these circumstances contrary to government laws and the Ministry’s instructions.”

The Tamkeen center report stated that since the beginning of the crisis on the March 18 until April 10 they received a response on the hotline and they were informed of a number of cases in different facilities, but since April 11 the response slowed down and most of the calls were not answered.

With regard to the electronic service, the report highlighted that a number of workers filed complaints, but there was no follow-up, which means that this electronic service has a deficiency in terms of requiring the worker to write his/her name in the complaint, which may prevent workers from filing a complaint in fear of the employer , and there are foreign workers who cannot use the available languages features to fill in the complaint.

The Center recommended reviewing the mechanism for receiving complaints from employees, and that electronic services should be in more than one language, in addition to monitoring the hotline and the mechanism for answering phone calls.

In the same context, the Secretary General of the National Committee for Women’s Affairs, Salma Al-Nuwer, revealed violations related to the wages of private sector teachers and a violation of many articles in the Labor Law represented by 2,28,50,5, and the “Stand with the Teacher” campaign provided the National Committee for Women’s Affairs with a list of 63 schools that practice different violations, according to the Jordanian “Al-Ghad” website.
