Libya: 300.000 Government Employees in Libya Without Salaries for Years

According to The New Arab 300.000 government employees in Libya are awaiting salaries, many of which have not been spent since 2014, according to official reports.

The New Arab also confirmed, quoting testimonies from employees of the National Oil Corporation and the Environment Public Authority, and from a number of troubled companies that they had not received their salaries for years.

In the same context, Minister of Finance of the National Accord Government, Faraj Boumtari, said that the number of government employees who did not receive their salaries was 90.000 in 2014, and began to escalate to reach 300.000 employees, and explained that the reason is due to the random decisions taken by successive governments.

The number of workers in the government sector amounts to 1.8 million government employees, and they constitute about 25 % of the Libyan population,

The minimum wage in Libya is 450 Dinars (321 Dollars), and salaries account for 56% of the total public spending, according to data from the Central Bank of Libya.

The Ministry of Finance had imposed the use of the national number in obtaining the monthly salary through the electronic system.

The national number provides a unique reference number for every citizen in the country, and citizens use it to access their basic data in the national database, and it is used to pay salaries and aims to prevent salaries from being paid to the same person if he/she works in more than one state agency, to prevent duplication of employment.
