According to a Migrant News report on the situation of foreign students in France, which confirmed that their studies are stalled, which made their educational fate unknown and caused their dreams that they have built in the past about to become wasted, especially with the loss of their jobs that helped them continue their studies and their livelihood.
The number of foreign students that France received last year reached 325.000, to top the non-English-speaking countries in terms of attracting foreign students, and to occupy the fourth place globally after the United States of America, the United Kingdom and Australia.
In the current Corona pandemic crisis, these students live in difficult conditions, especially those from poor countries who intend to immigrate and settle in France.
The current situation has placed foreign students in front of two harmful options that are, either staying in France and risking contracting the virus and bearing the life costs, especially since most of them lost their work, or return to their country and risk losing the dreams they built there.
Certificates for foreign students confirmed to Migrant News that they stopped looking for any opportunities for practical training, because the academic year officially ends in most universities at the end of August, and the law obliges any institution or company to not exceed the practical training period of the school year. Hence, if the current school year is not extended, the opportunity to join practical training is almost non-existent for students.
French authorities had issued a statement announcing the extension of the residency permits that ended after the announcement of the quarantine on March 16, and the decision singled out both long-stay visas and all residence permits (except for special permits issued to diplomatic and consular staff), temporary residence permits and asylum application certificates and residence permit requests receipts.
French Ministry of Education and Higher Education issued a statement last Thursday, announcing that it would extend the registration of doctoral students in French universities for one additional year, if they needed this extension, and the statement called for the necessity of extending the employment contracts of researchers and doctoral students as well for those who have contracts.
