Jordan: Teachers Syndicate Calls for Stopping Salary Deductions and the Payment of Bonuses

Jordanian Teachers Association called on the government to stop the deductions on salaries, and to pay bonuses similar to other sectors, specifically the education sector.

In a statement issued by the union, they affirmed that the union did not hesitate to sacrifice and donate for the sake of the country and presented many initiatives to mitigate the effects of this ordeal and this scourge, as it did not violate the law and did not oppose the defence orders issued by the prime minister, however the union wondered “if social justice could be achieved this way, by relying on the incomes of the crushed class of public sector employees?”

In its statement, the union also mentioned the problem of bonuses and asked, “Is stopping the bonus of 35 % of the teacher’s salary equal, while the salaries of ministers are 30 %, and the salary of (independent institutions) exceeding 2000 Dinars and more than 10 %? And the most important question: How much is left of the salaries of ministers and their likes after the discount? And how much remains of the crushed employees’ salaries of the public sector? Maybe they only have remained what provides for their daily food.”

The union asked about the fate of the teachers, who are the most affected by this decision, and other public sector employees who held hopes for the recent increase and took loans from different banks and today this increase stops?

The union also demanded that the deductions on the salary and all installments of banks and banking institutions should be stopped until the increase returns as it was, stressing the necessity of spending the premium as it was for all sectors, when the curfew is lifted and the rest of the public sector employees return to their work as usual, otherwise it would exacerbate the problem of the public sector and society.

The union emphasized that “Teachers today are at the head of their work and will remain loyal to their homeland, and they – as it was – will continue to put effort for the success of the experiment of the Ministry of Education regarding distance education, for the sake of our students, and to overcome the current ordeal and triumph over the pandemic.”
