Unknown Fate of 85 Irregular Migrants in the Mediterranean

Three boats were found, carrying 173 migrants bound for Italy, while the fourth boat was lost track of.

The German “Sea Watch” organization reported losing contact with the boat and said that it had 85 migrants on board, which was also confirmed by “coalition for rescue”.

The United Nations Commission expressed its concern about the lives of dozens at sea, this came after the tracking of a boat that was set to sail from Libya to Italy last Friday with 85 migrants on board.

These sources reported seeing boats in critical situations off the southern coast of Malta over the weekend, followed by a statement by the border patrols and the European Union Coast Guard Agency that one of the four boats that set out from Libya arrived safely in Italy while two are still at sea. A fourth boat had been found on Friday, but its fate was not known after that day. Sea Watch had completely lost contact ever since.

A UNHCR spokesperson, suggested that it is most likely that the missing boat had capsized.

IOM spokesman Flavio de Giacomo said it was difficult, at the present time, to confirm the existence of the wreckage of the boat or know the number of casualties on board.

Italy has long been considered a port for the docking of migrant boats, but after the Corona pandemic, Italy took measures to combat the spread of the virus, such as closing its ports and by putting any irregular migrants arriving in quarantine.
