Bahrain: No Wages for Foreign Hotel Workers

Workers in the hotel sector are facing a severe financial crisis, especially foreign coming from Asian countries, in an atmosphere of sharp decline in customer numbers, especially in the fourth-class hotels due to the Corona pandemic.

Union sources said that workers and employees are puzzled by the lack of work and a negative reflection on stopping the payment of wages due to them by hotel owners except for providing a place to live. In addition to that there are a number of foreign workers who have not received their salaries since January, that is, before the Corona crisis and revealed that most of the workers in this sector are foreigners, as the percentage of Bahrainis does not exceed 10% of the total workers.

It turned out, according to the sources, that the owners of the fourth-class hotels are investors who are located outside Bahrain and entrust the management of these institutions to managers who carry out their administrative and investment tasks in a limited manner, and therefore do not give the required attention to their workers in these exceptional circumstances.

The hotel unions suggest that the Ministry of Labor and Social Development communicate with the owners of hotels and agree to pay the ministry half of the employee’s salary and the other half paid by the hotel until the crisis is over.

It also suggested that the Labor Market Regulatory Authority communicate with the institutions and companies involved in contributing to helping workers financially every month in addition to not neglecting the role of private institutions and funds working in charitable works with the help of a number of these workers.
