Palestine: Shaher Saad Warns Against Employing Workers in Shelters for the “Israeli” Elderly

Shaher Saad, Secretary-General of the General Federation of Palestinian Trade Unions, sent an urgent appeal to Palestinian workers working in the Israeli labor market and the settlements, warning them against the consequences of accepting their offers of employment inside the shelters for Israeli elderly people, given their classification by the Israeli health authorities as areas Infected with the Coronavirus, where “Israeli” workers and foreigners avoid working there.

The government raised the “Israeli” daily wage for those who agree to work in it from 1200 to 1400 NIS a day, given the great risk inherent in this work.

The Secretary-General of the Federation also warned of a similar danger, which is to employ workers in medical waste without providing them with internationally recognized occupational safety and health equipment.

Saad also warned of the temptations in the wages that are offered to the workers to push them to accept health facilities in which the “Israeli” workers refrain from working during these difficult circumstances, including medical waste and restaurants.

“Israeli” operators, including the “Israeli” government, make great efforts to find those who accept these offers, under discriminatory operating conditions.

Saad also warned that some “Israeli” companies will continue to bury medical waste inside the Palestinian areas at this stage, because it is known that the waste coming out of the sections infected with the Coronavirus, has the ability to transmit the infection if it is not buried properly, which endangers the lives of herders, animal and water wealth in the country for great danger, especially the landfill of the colony (Ma'ale Ephraim) and its industrial area in the Jordan Valley, where there is the largest “Israeli” site for treating medical waste arriving from hospitals and laboratories in “Israel”.

The Zionist occupation transports various types of daily waste to the occupied West Bank, such as infectious medical waste, used oils, chemical solvents, metals, electronic waste and batteries; knowing that more than half of the Israeli electronic waste is disposed of in the West Bank lands.

It is known that the occupation uses 15 sites in the West Bank to throw its waste, and the landfilling and burial operations in the West Bank are carried out with the permission and encouragement of the occupation government, which provides these operations with financial incentives and significant government support.
