Tunisia: Notices of Battered Women Multiply 5 Times During Quarantine

The Minister of Women, Family, Childhood and the Elderly, Asmaa Al-Sukhairi Al-Ubaidi, announced that the number of notices of battered women on the Ministry’s hotline 1899 has increased five times during the period between 23 and 27 March-2020.

The minister explained in an interview with Radio Mosaique FM that the state of general lockdown and curfew to prevent Coronavirus spread, caused problems because of psychological pressure within the family may turn into physical and verbal violence.

The Minister of Women added that it was decided to transfer the hotline designated to receive notifications and requests for intervention from battered women, which was operating according to administrative time, to receive calls 24/24 hours a day, seven days a week, noting that notices from March 23 to 27 – March multiplied 3 times, and calls Regarding physical and verbal violence has increased five times compared to the same period last year.

Asmaa Al-Sukhairi Al-Ubaidi confirmed that battered women receive psychological counseling and legal guidance for battered women, noting that “because of the exceptional situation in our country, they cannot be transferred to regular shelters before undergoing an analysis to verify they are healthy, so we decided to allocate a new center to house them for 14 days.”
