The General Federation of Trade Unions of Iraq Emphasizes the Need to Enforce Specific Mechanisms to Contain the Epidemic and its Socio-Economic Repercussions

The General Federation of Trade Unions of Iraq called on the Iraqi government to implement an effective quarantine policy, prevent all forms of gatherings, including religious ones, and completely close the borders, stressing that salaries must be paid to workers in various sectors, including workers in the private sector, and a free grant to the unemployed.

In a statement, the union stressed the need to provide prevention supplies in all workplaces and also distribute them for free in residential areas, and to pay health insurance for all citizens who have been affected by the disease.

In the same statement, they also called for the urgent provision of a food ration within a ration card as well as the payment of vital allowances or a full incentive for workers in various sectors that have not stopped working, including alternates, particularly those working in the oil, ports, and electricity sector, or workers in municipalities, in addition to paying additional month salaries for workers in the health sector And especially those who have continued to do their work and honor those who have been in contact with people who are Coronavirus positive or are in suspicion of having the virus.

The General Federation of Trade Unions in Iraq also called on the Iraqi government to assume its full responsibility and put in place specific and rapid mechanisms specific to the epidemic and its economic and social repercussions, calling on all trade and professional unions and human rights organizations to pressure the government to implement the necessary safety tools to ensure the continuity of citizens’ lives.
