General Federation of Workers in the Sultanate of Oman Calls on Workers to Report Any Violations They Are Subjected To

The Sultanate of Oman’s Workers Union said that it has monitored cases of violations of workers’ rights in the private sector by some companies, under the pretext of measures taken to combat the spread of the Coronavirus.

In a statement, the Federation stated that these violations consisted of notification of termination of service, deduction of wages, and compulsion to leave on unpaid vacations, stressing that the Union is monitoring these cases in cooperation with the competent authorities to take the necessary measures in this regard, and that it invites all workers to provide them with information concerning any violations they are exposed to in light of the application of procedures and measures related to the pandemic.

Nabhan Bin Ahmed Al-Battashi, President of the General Federation of Workers of the Sultanate of Oman, said in an interview with Al-Watan website that the union monitored many violations related to some companies reducing their employees salaries, laying them off from work or forcing them to take vacations without dues, which violates the legal procedures related to this matter.

Al-Batashi expressed his surprise at the fact that some national companies that are decades old and benefited from the support, facilities and privileges provided by the government for years decided to get rid of Omani employees, a few weeks after the start of the spread of the Coronavirus and as efforts are made to contain the virus by government and private agencies.

Al-Batashi noted that these institutions need to bear their national responsibilities at this stage and cooperate with the efforts made so that we can overcome these conditions with minimal losses.

Al-Batashi also said that the number of companies that have laid off Omani workers or reduced their salaries amounted to 10 companies between medium and large, and solutions were found for a number of 4 employees in agreement between the worker and the company, noting that there are signs and indications about the direction of some companies to lay off their workers under the pretext of the current situation, which called for the issuance of a statement requiring all workers who are subject to attempts at layoffs or reducing their salaries to contact the union so that they can reach with them for a consensus that serves both parties and ensure that employees are not harmed.
